The Science of Yawning: Why We Do It and Why It's Contagious
You see someone yawn across the room. Suddenly — almost involuntarily — you yawn too. You're not tired. You're not bored. Yet your mouth opens wide, you take a deep breath, and you feel your jaw stretch.
Yawning is one of the most universal yet mysterious human behaviors. Every vertebrate does it — fish, birds, reptiles, and mammals all yawn. But despite decades of research, scientists still debate why.
The Old Theory That Won't Die
For years, the popular explanation was simple: yawning replenishes oxygen and removes carbon dioxide from the blood. When you're tired, your breathing slows, CO₂ builds up, and a yawn delivers a "blast" of fresh oxygen.
But experiments from as early as 1987 debunked this. Participants who breathed pure oxygen (supersaturating their blood) yawned just as often as those breathing normal air. If the theory were correct, oxygen should have stopped yawning. It didn't.
The Brain Cooling Hypothesis
The leading theory today? Yawning cools your brain.
Neuroscientist Andrew Gallup and his team found that yawning is triggered when brain temperature rises, and acts like a thermostat:
- The deep inhalation brings cool air into the nasal passages
- The stretching of jaw muscles increases blood flow to the skull
- The cool air cools the blood in the sinuses, which flows to the brain
- The brain temperature drops, improving neural function
Evidence for this theory is strong:
- People yawn more in warmer environments
- Yawning decreases when you put a cold pack on your forehead
- We yawn most at bedtime (when brain temperature is highest) and upon waking (temperature transition)
- Migraine sufferers (who have temperature dysregulation) yawn excessively before attacks
The Contagion: The Empathy Connection
The most fascinating aspect of yawning is its contagiousness — and the fact that not everyone experiences it.
Contagious yawning is linked to empathy and social bonding:
- Children start showing contagious yawning around age 4–5 (when theory of mind develops)
- People with stronger empathy scores are more susceptible
- Those with autism spectrum disorder tend to yawn less contagiously
- You're more likely to "catch" a yawn from someone close to you (family > friends > strangers)
Brain imaging shows that contagious yawning activates the mirror neuron system — the same network that fires when you watch someone perform an action and then perform it yourself. It's the same system behind emotional contagion: when someone smiles at you, you smile back.
The Animal Kingdom
Yawning is contagious in some species but not others:
- Chimpanzees and bonobos (our closest relatives) — yes, and especially for familiar individuals
- Dogs — yes! Dogs yawn contagiously with their human owners, suggesting cross-species empathy
- Wolves, lions, and penguins — documented contagious yawning
- Fish and reptiles — yawn individually but don't "catch" it
When to Worry
Excessive yawning is usually harmless, but it can signal:
- Sleep deprivation (the most common cause)
- Vasovagal reaction — a drop in heart rate and blood pressure
- Brain conditions — in rare cases, excessive yawning can signal thermoregulation issues in the hypothalamus
The Bottom Line
