The Taos Hum: A Sound That Drives People Crazy
In the early 1990s, residents of Taos, New Mexico — a small, quiet artist colony nestled in the high desert — started reporting a strange sound.
They described it as a low, persistent droning hum. Not a car engine. Not a refrigerator. Not wind. Something else — a sound that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once.
For some, it was a mild curiosity. For others, it was unbearable. People lost sleep. They moved out of town. They wrote angry letters to the local newspaper demanding someone find the source.
And here's the strangest part: not everyone could hear it. Only about 2% of the population reported being sensitive to "the Hum." The rest thought the complainants were crazy — or at least, overly imaginative.
Thirty years later, we still don't know what causes it.
The Hum Isn't Unique to Taos
The "Taos Hum" is the most famous example, but it's far from the only one. Similar low-frequency noises have been reported all over the world:
- The Windsor Hum (Ontario, Canada) — blamed on a steel mill on Zug Island, but persisted even when the mill idled
- The Kokomo Hum (Indiana) — linked to industrial equipment, but some heard it miles away from any factory
- The Bristol Hum (UK) — investigated by the UK government in the 1970s; inconclusive
- The Largs Hum (Scotland) — suspected to be distant shipping traffic
- Auckland Hum (New Zealand) — debated for decades
New Zealand actually funded a serious government study in 2002. They installed monitoring stations, analyzed geological data, and interviewed hundreds of people. The conclusion: the hum was real — audible at 56 Hz — but they couldn't pinpoint the source.
The phenomenon is so widespread it has an acronym: MOTOR (Mysterious Outdoor Taos-type Organic Rumble).
What We Know (and Don't Know)
Physical Sources Investigated
- Military installations — Taos is near a known secretive military facility. Conspiracy theories abound, but no evidence supports this. Hum reports predate the facility's most active periods.
- Industrial machinery — General low-frequency noise from factories, generators, or HVAC systems can travel surprisingly far. Low-frequency sound attenuates slowly with distance — a 50 Hz hum can be audible 10+ miles away.
- Power lines — High-voltage transmission lines can create a 60 Hz hum (or 50 Hz outside North America). But most hum hearers describe a slightly different frequency, closer to 40–80 Hz.
- Geological activity — Microseismic tremors, magma movement, or deep ocean waves can produce infrasound (below 20 Hz) that some people perceive as a hum. The Earth is constantly vibrating at very low frequencies — we just usually don't notice.
Physiological Explanations
- Spontaneous otoacoustic emissions — Your inner ear can produce sounds on its own. These are usually too quiet to notice, but in a perfectly silent environment, some people hear their own ears working.
- Tinnitus — High-frequency tinnitus is common. Low-frequency tinnitus is rarer but documented. It's possible that "hearers" simply have low-frequency tinnitus that they notice more in quiet environments.
- Sensory deprivation amplification — In a very quiet room, your brain cranks up the gain on your auditory system. You start hearing your own heartbeat, blood flow, and — potentially — internal neural noise that your brain normally filters out.
The "Hearer" Profile
Studies of hum hearers have found some consistent traits:
- They tend to be over 40
- They're equally distributed across genders (unlike tinnitus, which skews male)
- They're more sensitive to low-frequency sounds in general
- They often live in quiet, rural areas (urban background noise masks the hum)
- Most are not otherwise psychologically unusual
This last point is worth emphasizing: multiple studies have found that hum hearers score normally on psychological assessments. They're not "hearing things" in the psychiatric sense. They're genuinely detecting something — we just don't know what.
Why Some People Hear It and Others Don't
This is one of the most puzzling aspects. If the hum were a physical sound source (like a factory), everyone nearby should hear it at roughly the same volume. But hearers can be standing right next to non-hearers, and only one of them perceives the sound.
Possible explanations:

Individual variation in hearing sensitivity — Some people's ears are simply more sensitive in the 30–80 Hz range. This isn't a superpower; it's just normal biological variation, like how some people can see UV light after cataract surgery.

Infrasound is produced by:
- Ocean waves crashing on coastlines (a continuous source called "microseisms")
- Wind interacting with terrain (mountains, hills, valleys create resonating chambers)
- Auroral activity (the Northern Lights produce infrasound — yes, really)
- Large animals (elephants communicate with infrasound over miles)
- Industrial equipment at a distance
In the 2003 "Infrasound and the Paranormal" studies, researchers played infrasound (17 Hz) during a concert. Audience members reported feeling chills, anxiety, sadness, and a sense of "a presence in the room" — without knowing the infrasound was there.
Some researchers have suggested that the Taos Hum is simply infrasound from natural sources that some people perceive as an audible hum through bone conduction or inner-ear resonance.
What Happened to the Taos Hum?
The Taos Hum faded from public attention in the mid-2000s. Some say it stopped. Others say people just got used to it. A few dedicated hearers still report it, but the organized campaigns and town meetings died down.
This pattern is common in mystery phenomena. The hum either:
- Genuinely went away (industrial source changed operation)
- Became masked by other noise (more traffic, development)
- Was solved locally but never publicized
- Was simply forgotten as the original complainants moved away or habituated
The Deeper Question
The Taos Hum is a tiny mystery, but it points to something bigger: our sensory systems are not objective truth-detectors. They are evolved instruments tuned to a narrow slice of reality.
There is almost certainly a physical hum in Taos — some combination of industrial noise, geological activity, and atmospheric pressure waves filtered through human biology. But the experience of "the Hum" depends on your hearing range, your attention, your building's resonance profile, and whether you live in the right spot at the right time.
The sound is real. But "reality" in this case is a partnership between physics and perception — and perception is the part we understand the least.
The next time you're in a quiet room and hear a faint, persistent drone you can't quite place... maybe don't mention it. Or maybe you've just joined the 2%.
