Why Mosquitoes Bite Some People More Than Others

It's the eternal summer complaint. You're at a backyard barbecue, everyone's having a good time, and by the end of the night you've counted seventeen itchy welts on your legs. Meanwhile, your friend who was sitting right next to you? Not a single bite.

For years, the folk explanation was simple: you must have "sweet blood." It turns out that's not quite right — but the real science is even more fascinating.

The Deadliest Animal on Earth

Before we get into why you get bitten, let's establish just how remarkable mosquitoes are. They're the deadliest animal on the planet by a wide margin, responsible for over half a million deaths each year globally. Malaria alone kills more than 400,000 people annually, and dengue fever cases are rising as climate change expands mosquito ranges northward.

Only female mosquitoes bite. They need the protein in our blood to develop their eggs. And they are exquisitely equipped to find us.

Step 1: CO₂ — The Long-Distance Signal

From about 10 meters (33 feet) away, mosquitoes can detect the plumes of carbon dioxide we exhale with every breath. CO₂ activates their "host-seeking behavior" — it's the chemical equivalent of a dinner bell.

This is why:

  • Adults get bitten more than children — we produce more CO₂
  • Pregnant women are about twice as attractive — increased metabolic demand means more CO₂ and more body heat
  • People who are exercising temporarily become mosquito magnets
  • Larger-bodied people tend to attract more mosquitoes

As Steve Lindsay, a professor of public health entomology at Durham University, explains: "You've got a little furnace inside you; you're hotter."

Step 2: Body Heat and Moisture

CO₂ doesn't just activate the mosquito — it also makes them more sensitive to heat and moisture. Studies show that mosquitoes are drawn to warmth, and CO₂ enhances this attraction.

This is why after a run, you're basically a glowing target. Your body is warmer, you're sweating, and you're pumping out more CO₂. From a mosquito's perspective, you're lit up like a Christmas tree.

Step 3: The Secret Language of Your Skin

Here's where it gets really personal. As a mosquito gets within about 10 meters, it shifts from CO₂ detection to olfactory targeting — it starts reading your skin's unique chemical signature.

Your skin is home to trillions of bacteria — your skin microbiome. These bacteria break down the compounds your sweat glands release, turning them into volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that float off your body. There are over 500 different VOCs in human skin, and the combination is as unique as a fingerprint.

Researchers at Rockefeller University conducted a brilliant experiment: 64 volunteers wore nylon sleeves for six hours (effectively using the fabric as scent collection devices). When mosquitoes were given a choice between different sleeves, they showed a clear preference for individuals with higher levels of carboxylic acids — fatty acids produced by skin bacteria.

The most attractive person's scent was 100 times more alluring to mosquitoes than the least attractive person's. And here's the kicker: those differences remained consistent for years, regardless of lifestyle changes.

As Lindsay puts it: "Your relative attractiveness to mosquitoes is largely fixed."

Does "Sweet Blood" Exist?

The myth of sweet blood has been around for centuries, but scientists have thoroughly debunked it. Lindsay and his colleagues found that it's not about blood sugar at all — it's about your skin scent, which is determined by your genetics and the specific bacterial community living on your skin.

Studies on twins confirm this. Identical twins drew mosquitoes equally, while non-identical twins differed significantly. This suggests your bite-ability is at least partially inherited.

Why Some People React Worse to Bites

Here's a twist in the story: some people who think they're mosquito magnets may actually just be allergic reactors.

A genome-wide association study found a strong genetic link between our immune system genes and how our bodies react to mosquito bites. People with certain genetic variants develop those big, red, intensely itchy welts. Others get bitten just as often but barely react at all.

"As Ferguson at Glasgow University explains: "Some people think they're bitten more because they react more. Some people may get bitten often but barely react."

So maybe you're not getting bitten more — you're just the one who notices.

What Actually Works to Repel Mosquitoes

The good news: we know what works. The bad news: none of the folk remedies hold up.

  • Garlic — "minimal or unclear" evidence
  • Vitamin B supplements — no scientific backing
  • Ultrasonic repellent apps — completely ineffective
  • DEET — proven, effective
  • Picaridin — equally effective, less greasy
  • PMD (oil of lemon eucalyptus) — natural option that works
  • Insecticide-treated clothing — excellent protection

And one more thing: mosquitoes are opportunistic. As Heather Ferguson notes: "Put four people in the same place and one can attract about 90% of the bites." But even if you're the lucky one in four, cover up anyway — no one is entirely safe from a mosquito's radar.

The Future: Better Repellents

Meg Younger, a biologist at Boston University, is using gene editing and brain mapping techniques to understand exactly how mosquitoes process human scent. Her goal: repellents that last for days instead of hours, that don't feel gross, that people actually want to use.

"I think those are a reality that can happen during my lifetime," she says.

Until then, if you're the one at the barbecue getting eaten alive — blame your genetics, your skin bacteria, and the carboxylic acids you're unknowingly broadcasting to every mosquito within 10 meters. At least now you know it's not your imagination.
